Yields 4 burgers
Here’s What You Need:
- 2 (14-ounce) cans of no-salt added black beans (rinsed, drained, divided
- 1/3 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
- 3 tablespoons cannanaise
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 cup cilantro (finely chopped)
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil
- 4 seasame seed hamburger buns
- Optional garnishes: American cheese, tomato, arugula, bean sprouts, white onion, ketchup, cannanaise
How to Make Vegetarian Black Bean Burgers
Begin by adding 1 can of black beans in a food processor along with the cannanaise, bread crumbs, cumin, oregano, and cayenne. Pulse until a coarse purée has formed.
Move the purée to a large bowl and add the cilantro and 2nd can of beans. Mix well, and then divide into four separate patties.
Using a 12-inch heavy skillet, heat the coconut oil over medium-high heat. Once sizzling, cook each burger patty, flipping once, for about 5 minutes or until the outsides are crisp and lightly browned.
Once cooked, remove patties from the skillet and place on plate in preparation for assembling the burgers. Note: If you want a vegetarian black bean cheeseburger, place a single slice of American cheese on the top of your patties immediately after removing them from the skillet. Allow to rest on the still hot patties for a minute.
To assemble the burgers, place the black bean burger patty on top of the bottom bun. Top with your choice of garnishes, such as tomato, arugula, bean sprouts, white onion and ketchup, then top with the final bun.
For patients who need a stronger medicinal burger, there is the option of substituting ketchup for more cannanaise. Consider cutting the cannanaise with unmedicated mayonnaise to assist in greater precision dosing. Or, for those who enjoy the flavors of thousand island dressing, there is the option of cutting the cannanaise with ketchup.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
