An article on New York Times details an operation between local and federal drug agents and AT&T, the Hemisphere Project, which grants access to phone data from as far back as 1987 to assist with DEA operations. As the authors of the article state: “The project comes to light at a time of vigorous public debate over the proper limits on government surveillance and on the relationship between government agencies and communications companies.”
