Although New Mexico state Senator Jerry Ortiz y Pino wants to introduce a constitutional amendment to legalize recreational marijuana in NM similar to Colorado’s model to address the failed war on drugs, Governor Susana Martinez is vocally opposing Ortiz y Pino’s plan.
While Ortiz y Pino is still drafting legislation to take up the issue, the governor said Friday it’s an issue that she “doesn’t support … especially not through a constitutional amendment."
Ortiz y Pino is proposing a constitutional amendment that voters would ultimately decide on. The senator says it would be in the same vein as Colorado’s, decriminalizing marijuana possession, sale and distribution for recreation use.
