In a great article on policymic, Anthony Papastrat examines the number of people incarcerated for marijuana during 2011 and the costs associated with housing them. The punch line: It cost taxpayers nearly $16 billion to house the nearly 800,000 inmates in prison for marijuana ‘crimes’ during 2011. Marijuana prohibition is very expensive, violates our civil rights and does not stop people from using cannabis.
Not only is marijuana prohibition an infringement of our rights, but our prison system is absolutely ridiculous. How can we call ourselves the "Land of the Free" if we have the highest incarceration rate in the world?
